"Elements of Art" Lesson Plan

This year at CRCS in the upper grades, we are learning about the elements of art (line, value, shape, form, texture, color and space) in a more academic way.   We look at various pieces of art and see the variety of ways different artists use the elements to create their work. We then do art exercises to practice some of those techniques, and end with a final piece that displays the element for the day.
The following is a brief lesson plan for the one of the 7 Elements of Art:

     * discussion topics: types of lines in creation, contour lines, positive and negative space, techniques for using lines to outline, shade and create shadows or mood
     * Artists used: Durer, Stella, Picasso, Matisse, Rousseau
     * Exercises: connecting dots with lines, creating depth and perspective with a vanishing point, giving emotions to lines, using lines for shading
     * Final work: contour drawing of my shoe, done while looking at the shoe and not the paper...to remind students that seeing the subject is not the same as knowing what the subject looks like. Looking at the subject only allows us to see more than we know.

New LEGO After-School Club for CrossRoads Community School Boys

The new CRCS LEGO Club will be meeting after school from 3:15 to 4:30 on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, beginning on January 28^th.This “boy-geared” activity will be all about building with LEGOS, learning to follow building directions and also designing Lego creations. There will be competitions in different categories judged by staff and students at CRCS. Boys of all grade levels are welcome (Kindergarten through 8^th Grade)…LEGOS will be provided; all you need is a little creativity! We suggest that you send an extra snack for after school if your child will be staying for LEGO Club. Lego Club meetings will be held at CrossRoads Community School located at 2950 W. Ray Road, Chandler, AZ.

CrossRoads Community School Students Bring Christmas Cheer to Nursing Home Residents

CRCS students are encouraged to participate in a Community Service Project each semester. On Monday, December 2^nd, 2009, several CRCS students and family members visited the Westchester Care Center nursing home to bring cheer, sing carols, give gifts and pray for the residents there. Several of the students also presented special music on the piano and the harp. This is just one example of what kinds of opportunities families have on Home Based Learning (HBL) school days. This community service project was provided by Jan Ryan (a former CRCS teacher) and the “Hope Ministry Team” who regularly ministers to the Westchester Campus of Care located in Tempe, AZ. Open House Dates Announced

CrossRoads Community School will be hosting several Open Houses at the school for tours and general information. Interested families should call to arrange a personal tour on January 12th, 14th and again on January 22nd and 29th. Additional dates are available, please contact the school office at 480-722-1445. Come discover "the best of both worlds" as CRCS is commonly referred to throughout the community. Registration for the 2010/2011 school year begins on February 22nd. Easy Christmas Ice Cream Dessert

Make this easy Christmas, colorful, yummy dessert for the season. Be sure to buy the ice cream early; some stores may run out closer to Christmas

2 1/2 rows of oreos, crushed in food processor with
1 stick of melted butter

1/2 gallon peppermint ice cream, softened at room temperature about 1 hour

Spread Oreos (keeping about 3 T. of crushed cookies for topping) in 11x13 pan, or smaller. Spread softened ice cream on top. Cover and place back in freezer. If you wish, you can top with crushed Oreos and have a nice dessert OR you can make a fudge topping (optional).

Fudge Sauce

1/2 c. sugar
1 T butter
2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
2/3 c. evaporated milk

Heat all until thick, 3 or 4 minutes. Cool a little then cover with 8 oz of cool whip (optional) and sprinkle with leftover cookie topping. Can also chop 1/2 cups of pecans and sprinkle on top as well (optional). Keep in freezer until ready to serve.

8th Grader Middle Schoolers Get Creamed for a Good Cause!

The 8th graders in Mrs. Perkin's Middle School Class sacrificed themselves for a great Christian charity, Operation Christmas Child. The 6th and 7th graders won the contest, brought in the most boxes for donation, and got to cream the 8th grade class. It was good, messy fun! 2nd and 3rd Grades Perform Christmas Pageant!

During the CRCS Christmas Assembly, the 2nd and 3rd Graders, directed by Mrs. Henderson performed the Christmas Story. The class did a wonderful performance and reiterated the true meaning of Christmas.

CRCS Volleyball Team UNDEFEATED!

The 5th & 6th Grade CrossRoads Community School Volleyball Team ended their season Saturday with another undefeated win! That's right....all 10 games played and WON! Thanks, Coach, for leading the Eagles to 10 straight victories. Congratulations!
